Die 9 theretical subjects
The following subjects belong to the general subjects:
10 Air Law
Get to know the national and international regulations, the structure of the airspace and the traffic rules of aviation.
40 Human performance
Get to know the most important human organs and what influences flying has on your own body.
50 Meteorology
Interpret weather maps and forecasts, understand the structure of the atmosphere and the front system in order to identify dangers early.
60 Navigation
Maps, geographic and magnetic north pole, coordinates and radio navigation as the basis to safely reach your destination.
90 VFR communication
Structure and procedure of standard discussions with air traffic control, special cases and a repetition of flight weather information and airspaces.
The following subjects belong to the heli-specific subjects:
20 Helicopter general knowledge
Get to know the piston engine and turbine engine, how the individual helicopter components and on-board instruments work.
30 Flight performance and planning
Planning the flight route with the associated fuel requirements, the weight and centre of gravity and the performance limits of helicopters.
70 Operational procedures
Known peculiarities and special cases of helicopter flying in relation to operation and handling on the ground and in the air.
80 Principle of flight
Buoyancy and resistance, wing profiles and rotor systems provide the necessary thrust to keep the helicopter in the air.
Course schedule
Ideally, you should complete the theoretical training in parallel to the practical training. So you have a practical connection and can answer your questions directly with your flight instructor.
The subjects are divided into chapters and each end with a learning test. If you need assistance, contact the responsible specialist instructor or your flight instructor by email or phone.
Once you have worked through all the chapters and answered the questions correctly, visit the presence seminar for the subjects you have completed, which takes place around four times a year. In the classroom, what you have learned is summarized, questions that are still open are answered, and you complete a preliminary examination. After passing this preliminary examination, you will be well prepared for the official FOCA examination.

Theoretical examination FOCA / EASA
The FOCA exams take place every month at various locations in Switzerland. For the nine theoretical subjects, you have a maximum of six exam days, so-called sittings. There can be a maximum of 18 months between the first and the last theoretical exam.
If you fail one or more of the subjects, each subject can be repeated up to three times.
After passing the last exam, you have 24 months to complete the practical flight test (skill test), the practical radiocommunication certificate (VFR Voice) and the English language test (LPC).
